SRAM Red 22 11-Speed Short Cage Rear DerailleurWhen SRAM Red was first introduced, it was the full realization of what the company had begun with their first Force Groups. It introduced Exact Actuation and other new technologies that turned SRAM from an interesting side-note to a full on Pro Peloton-level competitor. SRAM Red has been ridden to Grand Tour and Classic victories all over the globe. Now they've taken it a step further with SRAM 22. The new 11-speed line from SRAM gives you an extra gear (usually the 15T cog on most cassettes) so you have a wider range of gears to choose from, making it easier to climb, fly over rollers, and upshift more smoothly when you're ramping up for a sprint.
The crown jewel of any groupset is the rear derailleur, and the SRAM Red 22 11-speed Short Cage Rear Derailleur doesn't disappoint. Superficially it keeps the same aesthetic appearance as the 2012 SRAM Red 10-speed rear derailleur, but the guts are all new for quieter, more precise, and smoother shifting.
The SRAM Red 22 rear derailleur retains the fabled Exact Actuation technology, but has upgraded it with True 22 precision technology. That means that from every centimeter you move the shift lever, the cable moves the same amount. While it was great with 10-speed, it's fantastic with 11-speed. One of the problems with earlier 11-speed groups is that the derailleurs sometimes had trouble coping with the extra width of the derailleur. True 22 solves this problem by giving you more leverage to move the chain across the cogs. This results in more accurate and smoother shifting.
SRAM also enlarged the B-knuckle on the short cage model so that it will shift up to a 28T cog. Combined with the extra 11th gear, this gives you more range and bigger gears to make the hills a little smaller. Shifting also gets a lot smoother and quieter thanks to the all-new Aeroglide Pulleys with ceramic bearings. These help the chain roll through the derailleur more easily resulting in decreased resistance and easier shifting and pedaling.
There's also a host of small but significant upgrades scattered all over this RD. The chain pulley cage has been redesigned for more precise chain movement management, resulting in less chain wobble, the spring-fixed barrel adjust has been upgraded to make adjustments easier, and the standard pinch bolt has been replaced with a titanium one, because SRAM understands that in some situations every gram counts.
The SRAM Red 22 rear derailleur is one of those rare products that feels more revolutionary than evolutionary. When it comes down to pure performance (and weight), Red 22 delivers up something that stands out from the crowd.
