In the past couple of years, mountain bikes have gone fat. Really fat. Like, 4+" wide tire fat. Never one to let some skinny tires stand in the way of adventure, Diamondback has debuted the El Oso de Acero fat bike. For those of you who don't speak Spanish, El Oso Grande means "The Big Bear", and this particular bike more than lives up to its name.

It starts with a heat-treated steel frame that's built with massive clearances that can accommodate up to a 26x5" tire. Yes, you read that correctly. To accomplish this, the rear uses a 150mm QR axle. Up front, a rigid steel fork with a tapered steerer tube and a 135mm QR gives you plenty of to get up and over just about anything. Shifting is handled by a Shimano Alivio 9-speed groupset with a high direct mount front derailleur and a set of Shimano Acera M3000 cranks boasting a 40/30/22T chainring set, mated with an 12-36T 9-speed cassette in the rear. The job of slowing your roll is left to a set of Shimano Alivio mechanical disc brakes, which offer excellent power and modulation. Now let's get to what you've really been waiting for: rolling stock. The El Oso Grande trundles along on a set of DB 75Wide rims laced to 32h hubs with cartridge sealed bearings, all wrapped up in a set of 26x4" tires. That's some serious rubber that will let you roll through--or over--just about anything in your path.

  • Heat-treated steel frame and fork are stiff, durable and lightweight
  • Front and rear thru axles
