2013 Van Dessel Gin & Trombones Cyclocross Bike
You can almost smell the frites from here. The 2013 Van Dessel Gin & Trombones Cyclocross bike pictured above is not scratch 'n' sniff, yet every tactile sense can easily fill with the sights and sounds of glorious Belgian cross when you look at it. Mud-caked tires and shoes, cowbells and flags waving at each impossibly steep course run-up, and every body part committed towards the finish line at 100 percent. For the same reason you wouldn't cut a steak with a spoon, you shouldn't tackle a cross course without the proper tool to see you through. The Van Dessel Gin & Trombones has immediate credibility. Decorated prominently with the image of the Lion of Flanders on the top tube, a tangled image of the Gin and Trombones on the down tube, and Van Dessel's own rallying cry of "ride inspired" on the seat tube, it's easy to believe that nothing can hold you back with this bike. However, the high-technology and race-caliber components chosen actually put your money where your mind is. The Gin & Trombones frame features plenty of mud clearance for even the sloppiest of courses, a lower center of gravity for better stability, a BB30 press-fit bottom bracket and a full carbon fork with a tapered head tube for maximum power transfer and improved front end handling. Further, the carbon seat stays and oversized chain stays deliver a predictably smooth ride with snappy acceleration.
The Gin & Trombones is outfitted with a SRAM Rival drivetrain and FSA Gossamer 46/36 cross-specific BB30 crankset. The carbon-levered Rival shifters feature a comfortable ergonomic and aerodynamic design and weigh in at only 320 grams a pair. Besides the DoubleTap technology, which delivers smooth up and down shifts in one motion, and SRAM's patented 1:1 Exact Actuation with the Rival rear derailleur, the shifters have a reach adjust feature that allows you to customize the brake and shift levers. The 11/28 OG-1050 cassette and 46/36 FSA rings are suited to handling almost any course you'll find during the year.
Disc brakes on cross bikes. It happened and in a good way. The Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes with 160/140 rotors feature a forged 2-piece caliper aluminum design with a dual pad adjustment. The sintered pads supply plenty of stopping power in adverse conditions. The Gin & Trombones frame still gives you the option to run canti-style brakes, but you'll need a different fork to mount the front brake. And why bother, the BB7's handle the job beautifully.
Easton XC wheels outfitted with a pair of highly-lauded Challenge Grifo tires provide stiff acceleration and solid traction. An FSA oversized handlebar, stem and Os-280 seatpost confidently handle the static component roles. Finally, a Selle Italia SLS comfort fit saddle with manganese rails and a forgiving relief channel supplies the foundation for one outstanding cross ride after another.
