Gravel grinding, adventure riding, all-road riding, whatever you want to call it, the idea of taking your road bike well, off road, has really taken off in the last few years. As more and more casual riders, enthusiasts, and off-season racers have started to push the limits of what road bikes can do in the dirt, a new bike has cropped up that is aimed to meet the unique demands of this type of riding. Among the many entries into the Gravel Bike category, one of the most exciting is the long-awaited and oft teased Ridley X-Trail, which combines the legendary bombproof durability and race-proven pedigree of the Belgian brand's experience in cyclocross and road racing into a stiff, durable, and totally fun platform.

The Ridley X-Trail carbon is built around a high modulous carbon fiber frameset that is stiff and lightweight, but also incredibly durable. The bike is disc brake specific, and will easily clear at least a 40mm tire, probably more, so you can have all the tire clearance you need for pretty much any adventure. Ridley has also dropped the bottom bracket relative to their race-winning X-Night and X-Fire cyclocross bikes, for improved handling on the paved road, and a lower center of gravity for improved stability off road. A thru axle rear improves rear end stiffness, especially when braking. The Ornyx full carbon fork features a thru axle to help stiffen up the front end and make aligning disc caliper and rotor easy after removing the wheel. A tapered headtube and PF30 bottom bracket keep this bike rigid and stiff, while the thing and flexible seatstays add plenty of compliance to the ride.

The Ridley X-Trail is equipped with Shimano's ever popular 105 5800 groupset, with Shimano ST-5800 mechanical shifters, a non-series crank and Shimano RS505 hydraulic disc brakes. With refined ergonomics and a completely reengineered front derailleur that makes shifting to the big ring, even under power, easy and efficient, 105 5800 represents a technological leap in mechanical shifting. A 50/34 compact crankset with a Shimano 11/32T cassettes gives you a perfect balance of gearing for flat roads and mountain passes alike.

Rounding things out is build kit from Ridley's house brand 4ZA components, including an alloy stem, handlebar, and saddle. Alex Draw 1.9S disc-ready thru axle wheels offer a great premium ride quality, with a semi-deep section rim for some aerodynamic gains that won't weigh you down. Wrapping up the wheels is a set of super premium Challenge Gravel Grinder 700x38c tires help keep you hooked into the trail with a geat balance of lightweight, flat protection, and traction for an excellent all-around tire.
