Floating rotors have been around for cars and motorcycles for some time as a necessary innovation to ensure optimum, uncompromised performance. This innovation allows for better disc centering when used with a bike's fixed caliper. A little float in the rotor also significantly reduces heat transfer to the wheel hub under hard braking. This allows the disc to expand while heating up without increasing tension in such a way that the disc would become warped. Reduced brake fade, consistent brake action, increased heat resistance--these are the promises of floating rotors. With an alloy center disc and the standard stainless outer rotor, the floating rotor also shaves grams off of overall weight.
