The Pedal Mafia name was derived from inside the group ride. The idea of “The Mafia” was created by the founder Jay Barron, who was quite new to cycling at the time. Jay couldn’t believe how cyclists looked after each other and stuck together on the road. Calling out obstacles, communicating passing and even helping to ride the wind were all very common practices among cyclists in Perth, who looked after each other in a Family like manner (La Famiglia).
