Shimano EW-WU111 E-TUBE Wireless Unit (D-FLY 2-Port Junction)
Firstly, I was able to get the EW-WU111 recognized by, and communicating with, my Garmin 1000 almost immediately...and I should have stopped right there: it isn't necessary--at all--to use the Shimano Etube app to update the EW-WU111 firmware or manage the device, and in hindsight, I should have heeded all the warnings not to do so. Because it's not possible to fairly review the Shimano EW-WU111 without mentioning its companion Shimano app (in my case the Etube app for iPhone), it must be said that it is far, FAR easier to brick this device **in under a minute** using the app than it is to actually update firmware and establish reliable Bluetooth interactivity with iPhone, and multiple online reviews elsewhere also attest to this.
After the seemingly inevitable crash during the firmware update via the iPhone and consequent bricking of the EW-WU111, I was able to restore functionality using the Shimano USB Di2 charger as the interface between the Di2 system and a Windows-based PC running the Windows version of the Shimano Etube app (I used version 4.04 of the software, version 5 is NOT compatible with this; and Mac compatibility is essentially non-existent). Afterwards, I re-paired with my Garmin 1000, and deleted the iPhone Etube app without ever giving it a chance to reconnect with the EW-WU111.
So, pair this with your bike computer straight away, and don't even bother with mobile apps, unless you're in the mood for hours of frustration. If you feel you must update the firmware (mine worked great **with the Garmin** right out of the box without any upgrade), use the method I described with a PC.
