It's fairly well known among pedal scientists that more contact surface means more stability between pedal and shoe. Alright, we know that there aren't really people in lab coats conducting experiments on pedals, but Shimano has this pedal really thought out. The Shimano XTR PD-M9100 does have a wider contact area for more security. This pedal has improved axle durability and the cylindrical contact surface easily sheds mud and debris. This makes for consistent clipping-in and out. The M9100 pedals will give you total control between shoe and pedal whether you're ripping downhill in an XC race or dismounting and remounting in a CX race.

You can spend your life searching for the lightest XC / Gravel pedal... going through dozens of brands, trashing tons of pedals, ruining shoes, having issues with staying clipped in, wasting thousands of dollars OR you can just buy XTR pedals and don't ever search for anything ever again. Yes they are a bit heavier than the weight weenie pedals out there BUT you will not break them and they will not break you. You will be one. Bike. Pedal. Human. The xtr pedal is for those who don't have time for bullshit and just want to ride without ever worrying about their secure connection to their rig. You will save thousands of dollars if you just buy this first and skip the wasted time and money on all the other crap out there. Trust me-- I've done it and it is a hard lesson to learn over a couple decades but I'm glad I finally figured it out.

While everything else changes Shimano pedals continue to be the only choice for hardcore MTB. I wear a size 43 shoe and these short axle pedals are perfect for lessening my Q-factor which has grown over the years with changing suspension design and BB assemblies.

Shimano XTR PD-M9100 Race Pedals (Black) (Short Axle - 52mm)
I've been riding with clipless pedals for years, and find it difficult to ride without 'em. These pedals are very well made and work great. This is my third set of Shimano XTR pedals. I have them on my e-bikes and gravel bike. The price for the short axle model is much lower than the "standard" axle (by $71), and only a scant 3mm shorter.

Very happy with these pedals. Using them on my gravel bike. Very easy to dial in exactly the right amount of tension for secure riding and ease of unclipping quickly when necessary.
