Surly Karate Monkey 27.5" Hardtail Mountain Bike (High Fiber Green) (S)
A solid bike build that’s versatile and suits my needs (trail/fireroad/single-track) just right. The heavy Surly steel may not be choice for everyone, but it does offer a smooth ride for those who do not mind the weight. I’m happy with my ride!

Everybody have fun out there!

Surly Karate Monkey 27.5" Hardtail Mountain Bike (High Fiber Green) (L)
My Surly Karate Monkey satisfies my needs perfectly. I am in my late 60s. Shredding, wild jumps, fantastic maneuvers and stunts is not what I do. I wanted a well made, decently equipped, steel bike, so I looked to Surly. The Karate Monkey is my third Surly.

I ride exclusively on dirt roads--soft, loose sand, deep ruts, rock-strewn trails, hard pack, washboard, undulating paths, and zigzagging animal trails. The wide gearing allows me to easily climb 10 percent sandy ascents. The steel frame is solid and gives me confidence when I am descending. The fork absorbs hits from dips and ruts. The big 2.8 Dirt Wizards keep me going forward on long stretches of sandy desert washes. I like hearing the tires roll over the rocks of railroad service roads. Nothing stops my Surly.

My Karate Monkey helps me maintain good fitness. My rides range from 10 to 15 miles. I feel young again when I am cruising along at 12-15 mph. I like pulling up under a shady Joshua Tree for lunch knowing that I am miles from home and got there under my own power.

I am 5' 10" with a 33.5" inseam. My Karate Monkey is a medium and weighs 34 pounds 12 ounces equipped with two water bottle cages and inexpensive flat pedals. I use tubes. Each Dirt Wizard 27.5 x 2.8 tire weighs 2.47 pounds/1115g. The tubes weigh .77 lbs./349g each. I have not changed components. The stock handlebar grips are too hard for me, so I will install softer, ergonomic grips.

Assembly took me five minutes. The only complaint I have is that the front wheel was not true. I had my LBS true the wheel.
