I've tried probably six different brands and styles of bike shorts, some of which were more expensive than the Performance Ultras. The Ultras fit me better and are the most comfortable at the end of a century ride. I have three pairs now and won't ride more than 50 miles with anything else.
Very nice bike shorts. When I shopped Nashbar for these I found very little information about sizing but I did find a description for an earlier version of the Ultra Shorts on the Performance site that said, "The advanced compression technology improves blood flow, and can increase the time to muscle fatigue. This does mean that the fit runs slightly smaller however, so if you're between sizes we'd recommend sizing up." I took this advice as I'm an older, less fit rider who has always purchased a size Large in other shorts such as Pearl Izumi, Garneau, or the old Descente AeroX shorts. So I sized up to an XL in these shorts and they fit appropriately. Take this advice with a grain of salt as I recognize that there are a lot of body types out there. I'm male, 5'9" 190 lbs, typically wear a size 36 waist in pants.
I've used Performance cycling products and clothing for over 5 years. Their "Ultra" clothing is definitely better than their regular line.
Ultra shorts' padding is "good" yet inferior to that of a "cheap" pair of other brands such as Pearl Izumi. I use Ultra shorts for relatively short rides up to 50 miles yet my buns demand better treatment on rides over 50 miles thus use other brands for that.
These shorts were very kindly sent to me as replacement for a purchased pair that have defects in the sewing that holds in the padding. The seams of the original pair (high visibility with yellow bands) were separating to point one can see light (or my leg when wearing) between the seam and the stretch of the shorts. I have pictures though their review site does not allow attachments.
I noticed the defect after wearing once or twice and first thought I may have snagged them (shame on me if so). Further inspection shows the seams separating in same manner (though not as severe) at other points around the crotch seams thus know it was not a mistreatment of the shorts.
Performance asked for pictures and immediately sent a replacement pair (they evidently and sadly don't make the high visibility yellow version any more). They were prompt, understanding and kind.
Checking the replacement pair prior to using reveals the SAME DEFECT in the same seams although not exacerbated to the extent of the first pair.
It is unfortunate yet appears they have a defect being caused and produced in manufacturing.
Hopefully, Performance will correct the defective manufacturing. These shorts may last a long time yet I'm not holding my breath for these seams.
Excellent so far. Only had a couple weeks but fits well and felt great on an 80 mile ride.
Great product. Very comfortable with a great chamois.
Just got a pair. These were my favorite shorts for many years, but when PERFORMANCE changed hands they had stopped selling them. I saw they had them again (MADE IN USA), and hoped they would be same high quality. THEY ARE STILL GREAT!
These shorts are as good or better than name brand shorts costing lots more. They fit me great(the large fits me snugly (as bike shorts should) at 6" 36"waist, 197 pounds 45"chest
Great shorts. I’ve been wearing Performance Ultra’s for over a decade, and these new shorts are even better. I have even gone for a 16 mile with no chamois cream.
Performance Ultra and Ultra Stealth shorts are the best-fitting and best-performing I've ever had.
Not the same Perrtformace Ultra Shorts I've purchased in the past. Fit too tight compared to prior years.
Nice padding, on the thicker side, firm.
I don't agree with reviews stating they are short. They fall above the knee, as normal.
Definitely feel the compression effect on the thighs. These are not loose!
I like em'
Do not buy these shorts. I have purchased five or six pairs of these Ultra shorts over many years and have always been satisfied with the fit and comfort in the saddle while wearing them. This time the gripper material in the legs will not hold the legs in place. They ride up and bunch in the mid-thigh area. I could not know this until getting out and riding in them. Customer service would not offer a refund for this defective item. They offered a discount on another pair of shorts, but would not say how much. After this experience I will never again purchase anything from Performance.
These were the first bike shorts I ever purchased from Performance. I have shorts from Pearl Izumi, Rapha, and L Garneau and they are all super comfortable. Disappointed to say these Performance shorts are the most uncomfortable bike shorts I've ever had. The sewn in cushioning has extra material that chafes the skin in the crease between the inside top of the thighs and the body. I thought maybe if I washed them a few times, that material would get softer...no luck.. They are unwearable.
Great shorts. Ordered XL I usually ordered large and they fit well.
I have been wearing Performance gel shorts the last seven years. These were my first chamois shirts. I have worn them on a 23 and 60 mile ride. The shorts were very comfortable. The chamois provided plenty of padding.
Good shorts for the price. The pad is substantial and maybe even a little bulky. But I think it will be just right with some use. The legs are nice and tight and the material is substantial and feels like it will last a long time.
I bought these shorts for my husband. He is a 66-year old strong recreational rider who has ridden many centuries over the years, and has always worn Performance Ultra Shorts. He needed to replace a few of the older style Ultras that were sold by the old Performance Bike Shop before they went bankrupt. Seeing that the New Performance Bike Shop was now selling a new version of the Ultra, he was somewhat concerned that the different chamois might not be as good, but having always had good luck with all the previous versions of the Ultra he had me order two pairs. After wearing these new Ultras for about two months now, he told me they are the worst Ultras ever. He said after about 1/2 hour in the saddle he is already wanting to turn around and head home - they are that uncomfortable. He compared them to a couple of pairs of the old style Ultras he still has and he noticed that the padding of the new Ultras is way too thick and stiff - probably twice as thick as is needed. The chamois also is one inch wider than the old style Ultra. The combination of those two factors results in way too much bulk in the crotch, leading to excessive discomfort. It also leads to numbness where you don't want it. In addition to the problems with the chamois, the shorts are too short and the grippers too weak, allowing them to ride up on the thigh way too easily. He said he wouldn't recommend these new Ultras to anyone. He also said that he hopes the New Performance Bike Shop will bring back the old style Ultras. He said they could sell them as Classic Ultras, and he would be willing to pay more for them!
ETA: When I originally submitted this review, the published review indicated a size of 3XL. I actually purchased the shorts in Medium. Could not see a way to delete the review of the 3XL size.
I've been buying these shorts for quite a few years. They fit me well and are a great value for the price. Please continue to make them.
I like these shorts because the padding is just the right thickness and stays in place.
Most shorts that I find in sports shops or even bicycle shops have too much padding, and usually gel.
Snugness of the fit is perfect. Quality of stitching and the feeling of the padding is excellent. My only complaint, and it's not insignificant is that the shorts are too short... they are about 8 inches above the knee. That's a problem and would keep me from recommending these shorts to anyone.
This is my 4th pair of Performance Ultra Shorts. I have found them to be very comfortable and durable. My rides are generally between 30 to 70 miles without discomfort.
